Cradles to Crayosn

Rediscovery, Inc. provides stable living environments, vocational and educational training, clinical supports and aftercare services to youth transitioning out of state custody.

Social Problem:

Cradles to Crayons

Every year, 20,000 youth age out state custody nationwide, nearly half of whom have not finished high school, have no job, and have no stable place to live. Without basic skills and social support, they are at high risk for homelessness, incarceration, and on-going dependence on state systems of care as adults.

Key Accomplishments & Social Impact:

  • Started as one six-bed residence and an Alternative Education Program that has expanded to include a twelve-bed group home and ten apartments.
  • Opened with a budget of approximately $475,000 that has expanded to $1.8 million.
  • Piloted a social enterprise called Teen L.E.E.P. Books in August 2004 to support vocational and educational training needs.
  • Started the only formalized alumni program in Massachusetts.

Future Plans:

Over the next three to five years, Rediscovery House hopes to
accomplish the following three goals:

  • Open a supportive housing program for youth, ages 18-21, who have left state custody and have difficulty finding and maintaining an affordable apartment.
  • Open an alternative education “resource center” that houses all academic, social enterprise and life skills programs.
  • Capture and disseminate best practices to other agencies serving older adolescents.
  • Expand its programs to serve a total of over 250 youth annually.

Focus of Services

Massachusetts, ages 16-22, who are currently in state custody or are recently living on their own, after leaving state custody.

Get Involved

In addition to financial capital to enhance and expand its programs, Rediscovery House is seeking assistance in the following areas:

  • Identifying volunteers to provide tutoring, mentoring and skill-building workshops for youth.
  • Identifying an individual or company to create a pioneering evaluation system to capture outcomes and track alumni
  • Creating professional development opportunities and an incentive system for staff.
  • Strengthening accounting/bookkeeping and general administrative support for fundraising and marketing.
  • Updating marketing materials.
