Common Impact

CitySprouts

The mission of Common Impact is to strengthen high-potential nonprofit organizations by helping companies deploy their human capital more strategically in the social sector.Rooted in the growing ethic of corporate responsibility, their approach harnesses the power of corporate volunteers to execute service projects with community-based nonprofits and create successful long-term partnerships that are of value to all.

Common Impact's model has resulted in successful outcomes:

  • Stronger nonprofits: Ninety-six percent of Common Impact’s clients report that their volunteer teams significantly impact their ability to meet their mission.
  • Engaged volunteers: Thirty-three percent of Common Impact’s volunteers remain engaged with their nonprofit client after the project ends as ongoing volunteers, donors and board members.
  • Business benefits: Common Impact’s corporate partners value their services for their effects on professional development and employee satisfaction and retention, as well as the positive impact their projects have in their communities.
  • Leveraged resources: All told, Common Impact returns seven dollars to the community for every dollar invested in its work.

Social Problem:

CitySproutsCommon Impact serves high-potential nonprofit organizations in three focus areas: after-school, housing and homelessness and, community health care. While these organizations excel at identifying the needs of their constituents and implementing effective solutions to address these needs, they often lack the critical business infrastructure and resources to support growth and sustainability.

Key Accomplishments & Social Impact:

  • Common Impact has grown 550 percent, serving 6 nonprofits in 2002 and 115 in 2006.
  • Each Common Impact project results in $20,000-$40,000 in immediate value to their nonprofit client as well as long-term self-sufficiency. This represents ten times the value of equivalent time spent on traditional volunteering, and 4-8 times the value of an average corporate cash donation.
  • To date, Common Impact has generated more than $6 million in net-new resources for the social sector and a 7:1 social return on investment.
  • Common Impact has 15 corporate partners including Accenture, CA, Cisco, Eaton Vance, Fidelity Investments, and State Street Corporation, whose employees have donated nearly 9,000 combined hours of technology, marketing and HR expertise to high-potential nonprofits.
