The Boston Children’s Chorus is a multi-racial, multi-cultural arts organization that uses music as a powerful tool for social change by bringing together a diverse group of children to sing, perform and serve as ambassadors of harmony in and around the city of Boston.
Social Porblem:
For decades Boston has been both racially diverse and filled with racial tension. In 2000, the Census reported that the city now has a population of greater then 50% represented by a variety of minority populations. There is an economic and social imperative to develop a bridge among these communities.
Key Accomplishments & Social Impact:
- Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert televised live on WCVB-TV Channel 5 for three consecutive years, with plans underway for national syndication to at least 70% of the U.S. media market in 2009.
- Regularly collaborates with nationally-renowned ensembles, most notably with the Boston Pops in front of a crowd of 500,000 for the 2007 Fourth of July Celebration, televised on CBS to seven million viewers across the country.
- Tours to date include Japan, Mexico, Oregon and Chicago.
Future Plans:
Boston Children’s Chorus is emerging as a vibrant world-class cultural institution and one of the choral world’s foremost models of artistic and educational excellence. Through a strategic growth plan, we will continue to nurture growing numbers of Boston area children and teens as successful and responsible leaders and citizens as we unite diverse communities to sing, develop relationships and dissolve social barriers.
